Solar Storm Today
A solar storm is not one single measurement. Check geomagnetic disturbance, solar radiation and radio blackouts separately; a solar flare does not automatically mean a geomagnetic storm at Earth.
Latest geomagnetic reading
Kp 2.0
Below geomagnetic storm threshold
NOAA interval begins
Kp summarizes a three-hour interval. The page checks sources every five minutes; that is not NOAA's observation cadence.
Is there a solar storm today?
The latest planetary Kp reading below describes its NOAA reporting interval, not every moment of today. Kp 5 or above corresponds to geomagnetic storm levels. A lower latest reading cannot rule out a storm earlier today or later today.
Three different hazards
NOAA uses G1–G5 for geomagnetic storms, S1–S5 for solar radiation storms and R1–R5 for radio blackouts. These scales describe different effects and should not be used interchangeably.
What could change next?
Earth-directed coronal mass ejections and fast solar wind streams can disturb Earth’s magnetic field. Arrival predictions have uncertainty. Check NOAA notices and the three-day outlook alongside observed conditions.
What should you do?
For aurora viewing, check darkness and local clouds. For aviation, communications or power-system decisions, follow official agency and operator guidance rather than an aurora score.
