Geomagnetic Storm Warnings

A NOAA geomagnetic storm warning is an official notice about expected, imminent or ongoing geomagnetic conditions. A forecast score or a high Kp reading alone is not an official warning.

Latest geomagnetic reading

Kp 3.3

Below geomagnetic storm threshold

NOAA interval begins

Kp summarizes a three-hour interval. The page checks sources every five minutes; that is not NOAA's observation cadence.

Watch, warning or alert?

A watch gives advance notice of increased risk. A warning indicates greater confidence in an event’s occurrence or timing. A threshold alert reports a specified level already reached.

Check the validity period

An issued notice may expire, be extended or be cancelled. The recent-notice list below preserves NOAA’s issue time; use the full official notice to determine its current validity.

Not the same as a solar flare warning

Geomagnetic disturbance, radiation storms and radio blackouts have separate scales. A flare’s X-ray class does not specify the severity of a geomagnetic storm at Earth.

Local decisions

A G-scale warning describes a planetary hazard. Follow official operational guidance for infrastructure and local emergency information for ground-level weather hazards.
