How Solar Flares Affect Earth

A solar flare is a sudden, intense burst of electromagnetic radiation from a magnetically active region on the Sun. Because it travels at the speed of light, we detect it about 8 minutes after it happens.

Immediate Impact: Radio Blackouts

The X-ray and extreme UV surge ionizes Earth's dayside upper atmosphere, absorbing high-frequency (HF) radio signals used by aviation, shipping, and amateur operators. An M-class flare can cause minor R1 blackouts; an X-class flare can cause R3+ blackouts lasting an hour or more on the sunlit hemisphere.

Not the Same as Aurora

Flares by themselves don't drive aurora. What matters for aurora is whether the flare launched an Earth-directed coronal mass ejection alongside it. Many strong flares produce no CME, and many quiet regions launch CMEs without any bright flare at all.

Flare Classes

A, B, C, M, and X are the flare classes, each ten times stronger than the last. Within each class, numbers 1โ€“9 subdivide the range. So X2 is twice as strong as X1, and X10 is ten times stronger than X1.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are solar flares dangerous on the ground?

No. Earth's atmosphere absorbs the X-ray and UV radiation completely. Only astronauts and satellites are directly exposed.

How often are X-class flares?

During solar maximum, roughly 10 per month. During solar minimum, sometimes none for months at a time.
