Space Phenomena

Solar & Space Weather

Violent eruptions, magnetic disturbances and charged particles flowing from the Sun and interacting with planetary environments.

The Sun is a magnetically active star. Its magnetic field stores energy that is sometimes released as flares and coronal mass ejections, and a constant stream of charged particles, the solar wind, flows outward and shapes the space environment around every planet. When that material reaches Earth it can disturb the magnetic field and produce auroras.
