Extreme & Unusual Objects

Rare Cosmic Transients

Astronomers monitor the sky for events that suddenly brighten, fade or change on timescales from milliseconds to years.

Transients are a gateway to the most violent events, and some remain unexplained.

  1. Observe

Something new appears or a known source changes.

  2. Measure

Repeated images and quick follow-up spectra.

  3. Model

Classification by light-curve shape and spectrum.

  4. Explain

    The sky is not static.

What is it?

A transient is any astronomical source that appears, brightens, fades or changes on a timescale short enough to notice. Discovering them requires observing the same sky repeatedly and comparing.

Some transients have well-understood causes; others, such as luminous fast blue optical transients like AT2018cow, are still puzzling.

How does it happen?

  1. Stage 1
Survey compares new images with old ones
  2. Stage 2
    Alert is issued
  3. Stage 3
    Follow-up telescopes observe
  4. Stage 4
    Source is classified and named

What do we actually observe?

Milliseconds
Fast radio bursts.
Seconds to minutes
Gamma-ray bursts and stellar flares.
Days to weeks
Novae, kilonovae and supernovae.
Months to years
Tidal disruption events and flaring galactic nuclei.

How do scientists detect it?

  • Optical surveys. ZTF, ATLAS, ASAS-SN, Pan-STARRS and the Vera C. Rubin Observatory.
  • High-energy missions. Swift, Fermi and Einstein Probe catch X-ray and gamma-ray transients.
  • Radio telescopes. CHIME and ASKAP find radio bursts.
  • Alert networks and brokers. Systems distribute alerts so many telescopes can respond within minutes.

Why does it matter?

  • They reveal short-lived extreme physics.
  • Multi-messenger events combine light, gravitational waves and neutrinos.

The SpaceWeatherTracker connection

SpaceWeatherTracker watches the Sun for solar flares and other rapid changes. This page widens that idea to the rest of the sky, but we do not show live transient alerts here.

This is an explainer. SpaceWeatherTracker does not show live data for this phenomenon; see the “Space Phenomena Now” section on the hub for what is currently monitored.

Rare Cosmic Transients: common questions

What is an astronomical transient?

An object or event that changes noticeably in brightness or appearance over a short time.

Can amateurs find transients?

Yes. Many novae and some supernovae have been discovered by amateur astronomers.
