The February 2022 Starlink Satellite Loss
February 4, 2022Geomagnetic StormKp 9
What happened
A modest G1–G2 geomagnetic storm following a February 3, 2022 launch caused enough thermospheric heating and drag to prevent 38 of 49 newly deployed SpaceX Starlink satellites from raising their orbits. All 38 reentered Earth's atmosphere and burned up. The incident became the first widely publicized modern demonstration that even minor space weather can inflict major commercial-satellite losses when spacecraft are still at low deployment altitudes.
