Skylab's Solar-Driven Reentry
July 11, 1979Geomagnetic StormKp 9
What happened
Unusually intense solar activity in Solar Cycle 21 heated and expanded Earth's upper atmosphere, sharply increasing atmospheric drag on NASA's 77-ton Skylab space station. The station reentered on July 11, 1979, roughly five years earlier than originally projected, scattering debris across the Indian Ocean and Western Australia. NASA officially cited higher-than-forecast solar activity as the primary driver of the accelerated orbital decay.
