September 6, 2017Geomagnetic StormKp 9

What happened

The largest solar flare of Solar Cycle 24 — an X9.3 event from active region 12673 on September 6, 2017 — followed by an X8.2 flare on September 10. HF radio blackouts disrupted emergency communications during the Caribbean's Hurricane Irma response, and the associated CMEs produced a G4 geomagnetic storm with aurora visible across the northern United States and Europe.
