The November 2004 G5 Storm

November 8, 2004Geomagnetic StormKp 9

What happened

A cluster of X-class flares from active region 10696 launched multiple fast CMEs that produced back-to-back severe (G5) geomagnetic storms on November 7–10, 2004. The storms drove aurora as far south as Arizona and southern Europe, disrupted HF communications, and forced Federal Aviation Administration reroutes of polar airline flights.
