February 11, 1958Geomagnetic StormKp 9

What happened

A severe geomagnetic storm during the International Geophysical Year produced a spectacular blood-red aurora visible across the continental United States, Mexico, and Europe. In Boston, residents flooded fire departments with calls believing the city was on fire. The event became one of the most photographed auroras of the 20th century and remains a benchmark for mid-latitude visibility.
