The Carrington Event

September 1, 1859Geomagnetic StormKp 9

What happened

The most intense geomagnetic storm in recorded history. Amateur astronomer Richard Carrington observed an extraordinarily bright solar flare on September 1, 1859; the associated coronal mass ejection reached Earth in under 18 hours and triggered aurora visible as far south as the Caribbean. Telegraph systems worldwide failed, with some operators reporting electric shocks and telegraph paper spontaneously catching fire.
