How to Read the Kp Index
The Kp index is the single most important number for aurora chasers. It's a planetary average of magnetic disturbance measured at 13 ground-based observatories in the sub-auroral zone, updated every three hours.
The 0โ9 Scale
Kp 0โ2 means quiet conditions and aurora confined to high latitudes like northern Alaska and Iceland. Kp 3โ4 is unsettled to active โ aurora visible from northern Scandinavia, Canada, and Scotland. Kp 5 and above are official geomagnetic storms (G1 through G5), pushing the auroral oval progressively toward the equator.
Kp vs Geographic Latitude
The rough rule: at Kp 5 aurora is visible from around 55ยฐ geomagnetic latitude (Seattle, Edinburgh); at Kp 7 from around 50ยฐ (Chicago, London); at Kp 8โ9 aurora has been photographed from as far south as Texas, Spain, and Mexico. Your geomagnetic latitude is not the same as your geographic latitude โ the magnetic pole sits over Canada, so North America sees aurora at lower geographic latitudes than Europe.
Limitations
Kp is a lagging, averaged, 3-hour value. It cannot tell you what the aurora is doing right now. For real-time nowcasting, use the Auroral Electrojet (AE) index, real-time magnetometer traces, and the OVATION oval model โ all available from NOAA.

Is a higher Kp always better?
Higher Kp means aurora extends further from the pole, but if you already live under the auroral oval, moderate Kp often produces the cleanest overhead displays.

It's calculated by averaging magnetic disturbance over a three-hour window, so the value posted at 06:00 UTC describes 03:00โ06:00 UTC.
