Shock Wave (Interplanetary)

A sharp, fast-moving boundary of compressed plasma and magnetic field that forms ahead of a coronal mass ejection or fast solar wind stream when it moves faster than the surrounding solar wind can get out of the way — analogous to a sonic boom. The shock's arrival at Earth often marks the sudden onset of a geomagnetic storm, sometimes preceded by only a short warning window from spacecraft stationed upstream at L1.
